SEA LIFE Hunstanton

Sightseeing attraction | Hunstanton | England | United Kingdom

SEA LIFE Hunstanton is a fascinating attraction in the coastal town of Hunstanton in Norfolk, England, and is one of the most popular maritime attractions in the region. This state-of-the-art marine aquarium is located right on the coast and offers visitors an impressive journey through the underwater world that is both educational and entertaining. It combines an impressive variety of marine animals with interactive experiences and a strong focus on conservation, especially through its work as the only publicly accessible seal rescue station in Norfolk. The center is an ideal destination for families, animal lovers, and anyone looking to learn more about ocean life.

The aquarium houses over 2,000 creatures, from tiny shrimp to colorful tropical fish to majestic sea turtles and impressive sharks. One of the highlights is the Ocean Tunnel, an underwater passage that allows visitors to be surrounded by fish and other marine creatures swimming above and beside them. This area offers a close-up view of sharks, rays, and the huge Green Sea Turtle Ernie, often referred to as the star of the aquarium. The design of the tanks is based on natural habitats, creating an authentic atmosphere that showcases the animals in their element.

Another outstanding feature is the Penguin Beach, an outdoor area housing a colony of Humboldt penguins. These charming birds can be observed on a special path that allows visitors to see them both on land and underwater, gracefully gliding through the water or waddling on the rocks. The experience is complemented by the Inca Terns, seabirds with striking "mustaches" that fly and dive above the heads of visitors. Equally popular is the Otter River, another outdoor area where a playful group of Asian short-clawed otters live. These small, charismatic animals captivate with their lively behavior, whether playing in the water or nibbling on their favorite snacks like peanuts.

A central part of SEA LIFE Hunstanton is the seal rescue station, which has rescued and rehabilitated over 750 seals since 1989. Visitors can experience the team's work up close, whether in the hospital area where injured or orphaned seal pups are cared for, or in the underwater observation area where the animals can be seen swimming and playing. The six permanent residents include seals like Sally, Amber, and Pippa, who win over guests with their playful nature. The center rescues over 40 seal pups from Norfolk and the surrounding areas annually and releases them back into the wild whenever possible. This work is supported through a partnership with the Sea Life Trust, a charity that promotes projects worldwide to protect marine life and their habitats.

In addition to the marine world, SEA LIFE Hunstanton also offers a rainforest section, providing a welcome change from the underwater world. Here, visitors can experience ranger-led tours and discover a variety of animals, including Madagascar hissing cockroaches, leafcutter ants, and other exotic creatures. These interactive experiences, combined with touch pools where children can gently touch starfish and crabs, make the center a place that not only invites observation, but also participation. Regular talks and feeding demonstrations by the dedicated staff deepen understanding of the animals' lifestyles and needs, emphasizing the importance of marine conservation.

The facility is family-friendly and mostly wheelchair accessible, with the seal underwater area being an exception as it is only accessible via steps – however, the animals can also be seen from the ground level area. Wheelchairs are available for visitors with mobility restrictions, and assistance dogs are allowed. A café offers refreshments and snacks, while a souvenir shop at the exit offers marine-themed souvenirs such as plush toys and collectibles. The staff is known for their friendliness and expertise, making the visit even more enjoyable.

SEA LIFE Hunstanton is conveniently located near the promenade of Hunstanton, a town that is already an attractive destination with its cliffs, beaches, and typical coastal atmosphere. The aquarium complements this offering perfectly, especially on days when the weather makes outdoor activities less inviting. It is a place that not only entertains, but also raises awareness for ocean conservation by supporting global initiatives such as breeding programs for endangered species and beach clean-ups. Whether admiring the playful otters, majestic sharks, or waddling penguins – SEA LIFE Hunstanton offers an unforgettable experience that brings the wonders of the seas closer in an impressive way.

We visit often and the fish are always looking so happy, clean and healthy. The team are wonderful. They have such passion and love for all the creatures. They have recently acquired a younger otter friend for their resident old male otter to have companionship. They rescue baby seals along the shoreline and rehabilitate them. Every single animal looks well and happy. Many of the fish will play with you, swimming up to look at you and chase you. What a wonderful place ran by dedicated people <3

Apparently cashless now, really disappointed children who'd saved their pocket money, so they spent it at the fair instead.. you need a mortgage for a drink. Dirty disabled/ baby changing station. Cute seals. Cheaper to buy tickets online but then online seems to be what they're promoting.

Some nice things to see, but flabbergasted by the price. Quite run down in some places, giving more of a feel of a free community centre than a place you spend £100 for a trip that takes no more than 1.5 hours. I think 50% of the price would feel fair. Sign of the terrible inflation in the UK i guess …

Found reception staff to be both rude and inefficient trying to force to disabled people to sign up online with little to no phone coverage and a non-functioning wireless connection. Everything else was fine about the attraction I enjoyed seeing the animals and the fish and everything else and the staff which gender is friendly and helpful but the reception staff were the whole experience and for this reason I will not be coming back to this particular attraction. Avoid

The exhibits were very interesting and varied, making time to watch the seals being fed was worthwhile

Visited 1st February, so well out of season and as a result the place wasn't everso busy... but that means more freedom and space to look at the animals. Our 5 year old loved it all. Was in the right place at the right time for the Otter feeding talk, which didn't quite go to plan as the otter was sulking, despite best efforts of the young ladies presenting the talk to coax him out of hiding - thanks to them for trying. Went back outside later on for the Penguin feeding time, they were much more co-operative. The Ocean section was particularly good, the tunnel beneath the tank and the huge glass wall to observe from... the massive turtle was laying against the glass for some time, so was able to have a good look. All staff encountered were friendly and helpful, we booked tickets the day before and saved a few quid, so would recommend doing so.

We had the most incredible trip to the sea life centre today. Quick to get in, Pixie, Laura, Katie and Daisy were so attentive and helpful. Especially with my neurodiverse boy who's obsessed with sea life. It was easy to know when the feedings were happening and I couldn't fault a single thing from our trip!
